Our Story
In the summer of 2008, Our founder Punsri Abeywickrema was working on his backyard, he needed a wheelbarrow. He didn’t own one, but his neighbor did. So, he borrowed it from the neighbor, but couldn't finish the work that weekend. Next weekend he needed it again, but now he's feeling bad about borrowing from the neighbor as he was not sure what the neighbor would think about him constantly borrowing stuff. He preferred not to buy one himself as it takes up space to store it.
He ended up renting a wheelbarrow from a local store. But then he started thinking what lead him to not borrow the wheelbarrow that sits idle un-used across the fence? The only reason was the "feel bad" factor. This must be a common problem across our society? Thats when he started validating with friends and family whether the "feel bad" factor was a barrier to sharing and re-use in our society.
Wouldn’t it be great if a whole network of neighbors, family, friends, and colleagues could share their resources by renting to/from each other? It would increase the usage of these goods that we already have, help strengthen the ties between neighbors as it creates more interaction between people in a community, help make our communities a little bit more economically sustainable by re-igniting hyper local micro economies as neighbors carry out these micro rental transactions, it will help save the environment by re-using and sharing the goods we already have. So, it's a win-win situation for everyone!
A great noble idea that help people make money and save money while helping save the environment! Thus was born Rentalic.com.
